May 15th 2003 was the first time I used the word "säälibanaani" ("mercy banana" or "pity banana") to describe a banana in the shop that's not in a cluster and is starting to show signs of being overripe, one which you buy because you pity the poor banana because no one else will buy it. I'm sure it wasn't the first time the compound word was uttered, but I had never heard it before. The word seemed to be an instant success, as the few people who heard me use it have already spread it. I dislike the concept of meme, as it has been generalized to mean just about anything and poor books about it are regarded as proper study, but I do have to admit that coining a term is creating a meme. Oh well—
